Website Hosting Explained: What Small Businesses Need to Know

February 27, 2025 7 min read

What Is Website Hosting?

Hosting is where your website files live. When someone types your domain name into their browser, the hosting server delivers your website files to their screen. The quality of your hosting directly affects how fast your site loads, how often it's available, and how secure it is.

Types of Hosting

Shared hosting ($3–15/month): Your site shares a server with hundreds of other websites. It's cheap but slow — like sharing a highway during rush hour. If another site on your server gets a traffic spike, your site slows down too. GoDaddy, Bluehost, and HostGator offer this.

VPS hosting ($20–100/month): You get a dedicated portion of a server. Better performance and more control than shared hosting, but you're responsible for server management — updates, security patches, and configuration.

Managed WordPress hosting ($25–100/month): Specialized hosting for WordPress sites. Companies like WP Engine and Kinsta handle updates, caching, and security. Good performance but expensive, and only works for WordPress.

Static site hosting/CDN ($0–20/month): For static websites (HTML, CSS, JavaScript with no database), content delivery networks like Netlify, Vercel, and Cloudflare Pages serve your files from edge servers worldwide. Your visitor gets served from the closest location, resulting in sub-second load times globally. Many of these services have generous free tiers.

What Matters Most for Small Business

Speed. Every second of load time costs you customers. CDN-based hosting delivers files from the server closest to your visitor, which is why static sites on CDNs consistently outperform WordPress on shared hosting.

Uptime. If your site goes down, you lose leads. Look for 99.9% uptime guarantees backed by SLAs (service level agreements), not just marketing claims.

SSL/HTTPS. Your hosting should include free SSL certificates. Any host that charges extra for SSL in 2025 is behind the times.

Backups. Automatic daily backups with easy restore. You never think you need backups until you do.

Why Hosting Is Included in Our Packages

We include managed hosting in every package because hosting quality directly impacts the performance scores we guarantee. We can't promise 90+ PageSpeed scores and then let clients put their sites on a $3/month shared server that adds 2 seconds of latency. See our hosting-included packages.
