How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Small Business

June 9, 2026 7 min read

Reviews Are Local SEO Currency

Google reviews directly influence your local search rankings. Businesses with more (and better) reviews appear higher in the local map pack — the three business listings shown above organic results for local searches. A business with 50 recent five-star reviews will almost always outrank a competitor with 10 old reviews, even if the competitor’s website is technically better.

The Simple System That Works

Ask at the peak of satisfaction. The best time to ask for a review is immediately after you’ve delivered a great result — finished a project, solved a problem, or received a compliment. Don’t wait a week. Ask in the moment.

Make it ridiculously easy. Create a direct link to your Google review page (go to your Google Business Profile, click “Ask for reviews,” and copy the link). Send it via text message — not email. Text messages have a 98% open rate versus 20% for email. Include the link and a simple message: “Thanks for choosing us! If you have 30 seconds, a Google review would mean the world: [link]”

Follow up once. If they don’t review within 3 days, send one follow-up. After that, let it go. Pestering customers for reviews backfires.

Responding to Every Review

Positive reviews: Thank them specifically. “Thanks for the kind words, Sarah! Glad the new patio turned out exactly how you envisioned it.” Personal responses show future customers you care.

Negative reviews: Respond within 24 hours. Acknowledge the issue, apologize if warranted, and offer to make it right offline. “We’re sorry about the delay on your project. That’s not our standard. We’d like to discuss this — please call us at [number].” Never argue publicly.

How Reviews Connect to Your Website

Your Google Business Profile links to your website. When someone reads your reviews and wants to learn more, they click through to your site. A fast, professional website with clear services and pricing converts that click into a lead. Reviews get them to your door; your website closes the deal.
