AI Overviews Changed Everything
Google AI Overviews — the AI-generated answer boxes that appear above traditional search results — now show up on roughly half of all Google searches. For small businesses, this means your website might be perfectly optimized for traditional SEO and still invisible to a growing portion of searchers.
The businesses that appear in AI Overviews aren’t necessarily the biggest or highest-ranking. They’re the ones whose content is structured clearly enough for AI to understand, trust, and cite. And that’s something any small business can achieve.
How AI Overviews Decide What to Show
When someone searches a question, Google’s AI doesn’t just grab the top result. It breaks the query into sub-questions, searches across multiple sources, and synthesizes an answer. Your content gets cited when it directly and clearly answers one of those sub-questions.
This means FAQ-style content, clear definitions, specific data points, and structured information are more likely to be pulled into AI Overviews than general marketing copy. Think answers, not pitches.
What Small Businesses Should Do
Structure content with clear headings and direct answers. If someone asks “how much does a website cost,” your page should answer that question in the first paragraph under an H2 that matches the question. Don’t bury the answer after three paragraphs of introduction.
Use schema markup. Structured data (JSON-LD) helps AI understand your content’s context. LocalBusiness, FAQPage, and Service schemas are especially important for small businesses because they explicitly tell AI what your business does, where you’re located, and what you offer.
Include specific data and numbers. AI Overviews love citing concrete figures: “websites cost $1,000–$3,000 for small businesses” is more citable than “websites cost different amounts depending on your needs.”
Build topical authority. Don’t publish one blog post about SEO — publish ten related posts that cover the topic from every angle. This signals to AI that your site is an authority on that subject. Our blog covers SEO basics, local SEO, schema markup, Search Console, and more — each reinforcing our expertise in web design and SEO.
Keep content fresh. AI Overviews prefer recent, updated content. Add dates to your posts, update them regularly, and publish new content that addresses current trends.
The Hand-Coded Advantage for AI Visibility
Static HTML websites with clean code, proper schema markup, and fast load times are exactly what AI crawlers prefer. There’s no plugin bloat to confuse parsers, no dynamic rendering delays, and no JavaScript-dependent content that AI might miss. Every line of our code is readable by both humans and machines.
